SEASON REPORT

The season is shaping up to be a successful one, stored seed is drying out well and looking good. With our program on track, we’ve pre-cut approximately 60% of what we have in cool storage. No major issues with the condition of seed have been noticed, which is great news for everyone.

We currently have over 13,000 tonnes of seed potatoes in storage, and almost 5,000 tonnes of carrots have been unloaded – a truly great season! The copious amount of rain we’ve experienced over the past few weeks have meant Simplot Quoiba have been kept in a consistent supply of carrots, out of storage.

The planting season is approaching fast. If anyone is in need of seed, please get in contact with Conor.

Spring cutting season commences soon. Let us know what your intended planting dates will be, so we can organise cutting.

Best wishes from all of us at Cherry Hill Coolstores and Tasmanian Seed Potatoes.

NEW COOLSTORES

Our newest building developments are progressing nicely. Earthworks began in June and July – just prior to the rain luckily. Plans for the slab preparation work is to start in mid-August, with the concrete pour scheduled for September. The machinery and equipment is due to leave the UK by the end of September and arrive to us in January 2022.

Upon completion, this will provide us with three new 1,000 tonne coolstores, and a combined additional storage capacity of 3,000 tonnes.

Giving support to those struggling with life’s challenges.

Our hearts go out to our clients Phillip and Richele Loane who recently lost their 19 year old daughter Catie.

On behalf of all the staff at Cherry Hill we extend our sincere condolences to the family at this sad time. Catie worked on the family farm and was known for her promotion of women in agriculture through the social channel TikTok.

This tragic event just highlights again the need for all of us to regularly ask our fellow neighbours and friends, “are you ok?” and to check in on those that need support.

With life becoming more and more isolating for rural communities it’s important that everyone can connect meaningfully with people around them.

Useful resources on how to start the conversation around mental health can be found on the R U OK? website www.ruok.org.au

You don’t need to be an expert to reach out – just a good friend and listener, the thought and kindness you show to others, may just save a life.

HOME QUARANTINE

A trip that was postponed numerous times, Andrew and Pam Langmaid finally got away on their big Australian holiday in late June. They drove through Queensland, Northern Territory and Victoria.

Highlights include: many pubs; swimming in hot springs; lots of red dust and unshaven photos for us on Facebook; manicures and smiles from Pam; breathtaking scenery; cracking of whips; helicopter rides over Kings Canyon, Uluru and The Olgas; whisky and racing tracks (not at the same time); and lots of big wide open spaces.

They were unlucky with the timing of their visit to Victoria, getting caught in the latest lockdown. But despite that, they wouldn’t change a thing – the precious moments spent with Jesse were well worth it, and it was great to see how she is going with her studies at the Longerenong Agricultural College.

Back home now and into 14 days home quarantine, Andrew wasn’t sure that two weeks will be enough time for everything he had planned in his garage!

CHECK-IN APP

Don’t forget to check in with the app upon arrival so contract tracing, if needed, can be done accurately in the community. You can check in from the front office upon arrival – ask Iris for help.

INTRODUCING: AARON BISSETT

Pictured: Aaron Bissett

Aaron joined Cherry Hill in 2021 and is our second ever apprentice! He is currently studying a four-year course at TasTAFE which will see him graduate with a Certificate III in Air Conditioning and Refrigeration. Having so many coolstores on site, it makes sense for us to have an in-house technician available. With mechanical skills and his forklift licence, you’ll see Aaron doing a variety of important tasks around the place.

Aaron grew up in Devonport and played for Latrobe and East Devonport football teams and was a multi-premiership player. Having now retired from local footy, his energy goes towards supporting St Kilda instead. In his spare time, Aaron’s true passion is go-kart racing, which he has enjoyed for the past eight years.
